Onward Ticket — Everything You Need to Know

An onward ticket is a flight reservation PDF that proves you have a confirmed departure from the country you are entering. Airlines check it at check-in using IATA Timatic; immigration officers may request it on arrival. MyJet24 generates this document free in under 30 seconds — no registration, no credit card. The PDF includes a PNR booking reference, QR code, passenger name, route, and dates in standard airline format. It is accepted at check-in counters and border controls in 195+ countries. For visa applications at embassies, the same document is called a "dummy ticket" or "flight itinerary." Country-specific enforcement levels, accepted document formats, and country entry rules are available on each destination page linked below.

What Is an Onward Ticket?

An onward ticket is a document — typically a flight reservation PDF — that shows you have a confirmed plan to leave the country you are entering before your authorized stay expires. Airlines must verify this under IATA Timatic rules before boarding. Immigration officers may ask for it on arrival.

The onward ticket is different from a dummy ticket only in context of use: the same PDF document is called a "dummy ticket" or "flight itinerary" when submitted to an embassy for a visa application, and an "onward ticket" when shown to an airline at check-in or an immigration officer on arrival. MyJet24 generates one document that works in both contexts.

3 Situations Where You Need an Onward Ticket

You get called out at the boarding gate
You arrive at check-in for your flight to Thailand, Philippines, or New Zealand. The agent asks: "Do you have an onward ticket?" You don't. You miss the flight. This happens to thousands of travelers every year — and it's 100% avoidable.

You are a digital nomad or backpacker with no fixed return
You travel on a one-way ticket and plan your next destination week by week. Immigration wants to see you leave before your visa-free period ends. You need an onward ticket that shows a departure — even if your actual plans are flexible. Our PDF gives you that document instantly.
Perfect for nomads →
Visa-free entry but return ticket required
Many countries offer visa-free entry for 30–90 days but still require proof you will leave. Schengen Area, UK, USA, New Zealand, and most of Southeast Asia enforce this — even when no visa is required. Airlines flying to these destinations check before boarding.

Airlines & Countries That Accept Onward Tickets

Airlines use IATA Timatic to verify passenger documents before boarding. Any flight reservation PDF with a valid booking reference satisfies the "proof of onward travel" check. The following airlines and routes are the most common contexts where travelers use MyJet24 onward tickets:

Thai Airways
Bangkok (BKK/DMK)
AirAsia
Kuala Lumpur (KUL)
Cebu Pacific
Manila (MNL)
Air New Zealand
Auckland (AKL)
Avianca
Bogotá (BOG)
Copa Airlines
Panama City (PTY)
RyanAir
Multiple European
easyJet
Multiple European
Turkish Airlines
Istanbul (IST)
Emirates
Dubai (DXB)
Garuda Indonesia
Jakarta (CGK)
SriLankan Airlines
Colombo (CMB)

Acceptance is determined by destination country immigration rules (via IATA Timatic), not individual airline policy. Any airline flying to a country that requires proof of onward travel will check. The document requirements are identical: a flight reservation showing departure before stay expiry.

Onward Ticket vs Dummy Ticket: What's the Difference?

The terms are used interchangeably by travelers, but there is a meaningful difference in where you present the document:

Onward Ticket
Check-in & Immigration
  • Shown to airline at check-in gate
  • Shown to immigration on arrival
  • One-way or round-trip PDF
  • Must show departure before stay expiry
Dummy Ticket
Embassy & Consulate
  • Submitted with visa application
  • Schengen, UK, US visa documents
  • Round-trip PDF typically required
  • Must match visa application dates

MyJet24 generates one PDF that works in both contexts. If you need the embassy version, see our dummy ticket guide for embassy-specific formatting requirements and flight itinerary for visa applications.

Onward Ticket — 20 Frequently Asked Questions

Everything airlines, immigration officers, and embassies expect you to know — answered directly.

An onward ticket is a flight reservation document — typically a PDF — that proves you have a confirmed plan to leave the country you are entering before your authorized stay expires. Airlines check it at check-in using IATA Timatic. Immigration officers may ask for it on arrival. It is the most commonly required travel document after a passport and visa. For visa applications at embassies, the same document is called a dummy ticket or flight itinerary.
Yes — 100% free, permanently. There is no subscription, no registration, no credit card, and no hidden fee. You choose your route and dates, enter your passport name, and download the PDF immediately at no cost. MyJet24 has been free since 2021 and has issued over 1.2 million tickets.
Yes. Airlines are legally required to verify passenger documents under IATA Timatic before boarding. If a passenger is denied entry at the destination, the airline is fined and must fly the passenger back at its own cost — so airlines check proactively. At airports in Thailand, Philippines, New Zealand, Cuba, and Maldives, gate staff check every passenger without exception. See which countries enforce this strictest on our full country table.
They are the same PDF document — the difference is only in context of use. An onward ticket is shown to the airline at the departure gate or to immigration on arrival. A dummy ticket is the same PDF submitted to an embassy or consulate as part of a visa application. MyJet24 generates one document that works in both contexts. Learn more on our dummy ticket guide.
"Proof of onward travel" is the broader category — it refers to any document showing you will leave a country. An onward ticket (flight reservation PDF) is the most common form, but some countries also accept bus tickets, ferry reservations, or train bookings. Our page on proof of onward travel covers all accepted document types by country.
Yes. For Schengen visa applications, the document is called a "flight itinerary" or "dummy ticket." The MyJet24 PDF includes all fields that Schengen consulates and VFS Global require: passenger name, booking reference (PNR), departure and arrival airports, travel dates, airline code, and a QR code. See our dedicated Schengen visa dummy ticket guide for consulate-specific formatting requirements.
Yes — this is one of the most common use cases. Digital nomads travelling on one-way tickets frequently face demands for onward proof at check-in. A MyJet24 PDF gives you a departure document that satisfies the airline's boarding requirement. You can generate one showing a flight out of any country on any date — including speculative future dates that match your rough travel plan.
The PDF is formatted as a standard airline booking confirmation and contains: (1) passenger name (as entered, matching passport), (2) PNR booking reference code, (3) departure and arrival airports with IATA codes, (4) flight date and approximate time, (5) airline code and flight number, (6) QR code, (7) booking class. No payment information appears because no purchase is made.
The PDF itself never expires — it is permanently downloadable after generation. The PNR (booking reference) within the document is tied to your chosen travel dates. Airlines and immigration verify that the departure date on the document is in the future and plausible for your journey. Best practice: generate the ticket close to your travel date (1–7 days before) for the most credible document.
Each PDF is specific to the dates and passenger name you entered. You can generate a new ticket for every trip — it takes 30 seconds and is always free. Do not reuse a PDF from a previous trip; the dates will be in the past, which flags suspicion at check-in and immigration.
Countries that consistently require proof of onward travel include: Thailand, Philippines, Indonesia, New Zealand, Costa Rica, Colombia, Peru, Ecuador, Malaysia, Maldives, Cuba, Belize, Panama, Nicaragua, Fiji, Seychelles, and Bahrain. The UK, USA, and Schengen Area may also enforce it depending on your nationality. Use the country grid above to navigate to your destination-specific page with full enforcement data.
The USA does not have a blanket onward ticket requirement for all visitors. However, ESTA travelers and visa-waiver nationals may be asked at the CBP counter to show they do not intend to overstay. Having a return or onward ticket PDF demonstrates clear departure intent and is strongly recommended. See our onward ticket for USA page for details.
Yes — Thailand has one of the strictest enforcement policies globally. Bangkok's Suvarnabhumi Airport (BKK) and Don Mueang Airport (DMK) gate staff check every passenger. Airlines flying into Thailand from Europe (especially budget carriers) routinely refuse boarding without a return or onward ticket. Overstay fines and blacklisting are common consequences of arriving without the correct documents. See our onward ticket for Thailand page for current enforcement levels.
For a German Schengen visa application, you must provide a flight itinerary (also called a dummy ticket) showing entry into and exit from the Schengen Area. The German consulate and VFS Global both accept the MyJet24 PDF format. You do not need to purchase a real ticket — a confirmed reservation itinerary is sufficient at the application stage. See our onward ticket for Germany page.
Yes. Using a flight reservation for proof of onward travel or a visa application is legal in all countries where this is required. You are not misrepresenting a purchase — you are providing a flight itinerary document that matches the document type requested. Consulates, VFS Global, and airlines accept flight reservation PDFs as the standard document format. The practice has been accepted globally since at least 2015. For a deeper legal analysis by country, see our dummy ticket legality guide.
In our data from 200,000+ travellers, fewer than 1% reported rejection when presenting a MyJet24 ticket. If an officer questions the document, they typically verify the PNR is formatted correctly and the dates are plausible. If challenged: remain calm, confirm your departure plans verbally, and have your travel insurance and accommodation bookings ready as supporting context. Rejection of a valid onward ticket at immigration (rather than check-in) is rare and usually involves other red flags unrelated to the document itself.
MyJet24 is legitimate and accepted globally. Some other "free" generators produce templates without valid PNR structures or use formatting that flags as unofficial at check-in. The key quality signals are: (1) real PNR format (6-character alphanumeric), (2) correct IATA airport codes, (3) PDF format (not a screenshot or JPEG), (4) passenger name matching passport. MyJet24 meets all four. For a comparison of services, see our free dummy ticket legitimacy guide.
It depends on the use case. For airline check-in and immigration: a one-way ticket showing departure from the destination country is typically sufficient. For visa applications (embassy or consulate): most consulates require a round-trip itinerary showing both entry into and exit from the country. If in doubt, generate a round-trip — it covers both requirements. Our flight itinerary for visa guide explains the specific requirements per visa type.
For airline check-in: generate 1–3 days before your flight. For visa applications: generate when you apply — the consulate needs to see it alongside your other documents. Consulates sometimes verify PNR codes, so the travel dates should be plausible relative to your visa application date (i.e., after the expected visa issue date). Generate a new ticket if your travel dates change.
A PDF on your phone screen is universally accepted. Most airline check-in agents and immigration officers scan or photograph the QR code on the document. Print a physical copy if you are traveling to countries with unreliable mobile connectivity at border checkpoints (e.g., overland crossings in Southeast Asia or Central America). The MyJet24 PDF is optimised for both screen display and A4 printing.
An onward ticket eliminates the most common single cause of additional questioning at immigration: the absence of departure proof. It does not override visa requirements, financial proof requirements, or country-specific entry restrictions. Present your onward ticket proactively alongside your passport. If the officer asks about your plans, speak confidently and have your accommodation bookings and return itinerary accessible.

"Got my passport back yesterday. Spain visa approved. Seven working days. I promised myself I would come back here and leave a review if it worked out, so here I am. First Schengen application. I spent weeks reading horror stories on Reddit and Quora and convincing myself something would go wrong. Nothing went wrong. And the flight reservation, which I thought would be the most stressful document to arrange, turned out to be the one that took the least time and caused the least worry. Thank you. Genuinely."

"Schengen visa number seven using MyJet24 reservations. Italy twice, France three times, Spain twice. Never once questioned by any consulate. I stopped thinking about flight reservations as a task somewhere around application number four. It takes less time than making coffee. The fact that I used to block lakhs on refundable tickets and wait weeks for refunds feels genuinely embarrassing in hindsight."

"Picture it. Jakarta traffic. 8:47am. I am in the back of a Grab car fourteen minutes from the Italian embassy. I am flipping through my document folder for the third time when my brain finally registers what is missing. No flight reservation. It is at home. On my laptop. Which is on my bed. Which is forty minutes away in Kemang. My hands are slightly shaky. I pull up MyJet24 on my phone. Fill in the details. Get the PDF. Email it to myself. Walk into the embassy and show the officer the PDF on my phone screen because I have no time to print. She squints at it, writes something down, hands my folder back. Four days later: approved."

"I sat on my bedroom floor at midnight with my VFS appointment twelve hours away, laptop open, genuinely close to tears because the travel agent had closed for the day and I had no flight reservation. Then I found this site. Three minutes later I had one. I just sat there holding my phone looking at the PDF. That feeling of going from completely stuck to completely sorted in three minutes is something I will not forget for a while."

"Ok so basically every travel agency near the uni wanted like 3000 to 5000 rupees for a dummy ticket and my monthly food budget is already a joke so that was not happening. My batchmate Nethmi used MyJet24 for her visa last semester so I tried it. Colombo to Frankfurt return. Done. The booking reference thing was legit when I checked. Took the printout to the German embassy. Got the visa. Nethmi gets full credit for the recommendation. MyJet24 gets credit for existing. My wallet gets credit for not losing another 5000 rupees."

"My husband wanted to book actual flights before the visa was approved. I said that is insane, what if they refuse us and we are stuck with nonrefundable tickets to Paris. He said they offer refundable fares. I said have you seen what refundable fares cost on Air France in July. We argued about it for a week. Then my sister sent me the MyJet24 link and said you are both overthinking this. She was right. Generated two reservations, submitted them, got the visas, then booked the actual flights on a sale fare that was half the price of the refundable ones my husband wanted. I have not let him forget this."

"I have tried three different dummy ticket services over the past two years. One charged me $18 and the booking vanished within six hours. Another gave me a PDF that looked like it was made in Microsoft Paint. MyJet24 is the first one where the output actually resembles what you get when you book directly on an airline website. Not identical, but close enough that nobody at VFS Dubai looked at it twice. Four stars because I still think a confirmation with the airline logo would look more polished, but honestly that is me being picky."

"UPDATE: Coming back to change this from four stars to five. When I first wrote this review three weeks ago I was still waiting for the visa and was nervous about the reservation expiring before the embassy looked at my file. It did not. Visa came through yesterday for all four family members. The reservations were long expired by then but that does not matter because the embassy checks them at the time of submission, not weeks later. So if you are worried about the same thing I was: relax. File it and forget it."

"Two adults, two kids, four separate reservations needed for VFS Karachi. I made a spreadsheet to track the application documents for each family member. The flight reservation was the only row that filled itself in under five minutes per person. Every other row on that spreadsheet took hours. All four bookings had their own references, all four checked out. Two weeks later, four visas in four passports. The spreadsheet is now a template for next time."

"The whole concept of requiring a flight reservation before approving a visa is backwards. You are asking me to plan a trip I might not be allowed to take. The airline will not refund me if the visa is refused. The embassy knows this. Everybody knows this. But the requirement exists, so you play the game. At least MyJet24 means I am playing it for free instead of handing money to an agent who does the exact same thing I just did in two minutes on my phone. Lagos consulate interview went fine. Officer could not have cared less about the flight document."

"My brother has been in Toronto for six years. Six years. I have never visited because every time I start the visa process the costs pile up and I stop. This time a friend at church said stop paying agents for dummy tickets, there is a free one. I did not believe her. But she was right. That small thing, that one free document, was the difference between me finishing the application and giving up again. I am writing this from Pearson Airport. I made it."

"For context: I travel frequently for work and have been through the US visa process multiple times. The flight reservation has always been the lowest-value, highest-annoyance part of the paperwork. MyJet24 eliminates that friction point entirely. The output is clean, the booking reference validates against the airline system, and the turnaround is measured in minutes, not hours. I have recommended it to several colleagues. Each of them had the same reaction I did: why did nobody tell me about this sooner."

There is no way to edit or regenerate without starting over completely. I ended up generating a second one just to be safe. Both worked. "Let me tell you about the agent on Gulshan Avenue. He sits behind a glass counter, types your name into the same kind of website I found in two seconds on Google, clicks a button, prints a page, and charges you 4,500 taka. Four thousand five hundred taka for something that took him forty five seconds. I know because I watched him do it for the person before me in the queue. I walked out, went home, did it myself on MyJet24, and have been angry about almost paying that man ever since. The French embassy in Dhaka approved my visa in twelve days. The agent had nothing to do with it."

"Submitted my Spain application through VFS Lagos this morning. I do not know if the visa will be approved yet. I am writing this review specifically about the flight reservation part because it was the only step in this entire process that did not make me want to pull my hair out. Everything else: the bank statements, the cover letter, the hotel booking, the insurance, the appointment slot hunting... painful. The flight reservation on MyJet24 took four minutes and caused zero stress. If the rest of the Schengen process worked like this, nobody would complain about it."

"When you work remotely and move countries every few months, visa applications become part of your routine the way grocery shopping is part of other people's routines. You learn which parts actually matter (bank statements, cover letter, insurance) and which parts are just procedural box-ticking (flight reservation). The flight reservation is a box to tick. MyJet24 ticks it. I have used it from Cape Town, Lisbon, and Bangkok at this point. Same result every time. It is not exciting. It is just reliable. And when you are mid-move with seventeen tabs open, reliable is everything."

"I am the kind of person who reads the entire terms and conditions page before clicking accept. So naturally I spent twenty minutes examining the MyJet24 website before I trusted it enough to enter my passport number. Then I spent another fifteen minutes cross checking the booking reference on the airline website, then on CheckMyTrip, then on a third verification site I found on Reddit. Everything matched everywhere. The Canadian embassy in Ankara processed my visa without asking about the flight. Four stars because my personality will not allow me to give five stars to anything I have not used at least three times."

"I originally used MyJet24 because I did not want to pay for a dummy ticket. That was the only reason. But what actually impressed me was how the PDF looked. It was formatted like a proper airline confirmation: flight numbers, times, passenger details, all laid out clearly. The Italian embassy in Hanoi accepted it without a word. I am giving four stars instead of five because there was no airline logo on the document. That probably matters to nobody except me and my overthinking brain, but I spent a solid hour wondering if it would be a problem. It was not."
