Do transit passengers need an NZeTA?
Yes — a transit NZeTA at minimum, held before you travel. There is one exemption and it is narrow: Auckland International, which has the country's only airside transit area, where you can stay up to 24 hours without one. Every other airport puts you through the border, and the border wants the authority.
Why is Auckland the only exception?
Because it is the only New Zealand airport with a transit area at all. Everywhere else, connecting means formally entering the country and then leaving it again. It is a piece of infrastructure, not a policy concession, which is also why it is unlikely to change.
What happens at biosecurity?
It is the most serious part of a New Zealand arrival and the part visitors underestimate. Failing to declare food, plant material or outdoor equipment can cost a fine of up to NZ$100,000 or a prison sentence. Declaring something is free and takes a minute; guessing is not worth it for an apple.
Which routes are the ordinary departures?
Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane, Nadi, Rarotonga and Singapore carry most of it, with the Tasman sectors dominating by a wide margin. A hop to Sydney is the cheapest and most frequent onward leg from Auckland, and it reads entirely normally to a check-in agent.
Is the six-month allowance per visit or per year?
Per rolling twelve months, which is the trap. Two four-month visits inside a year exceed it even though neither one did on its own, and the NZeTA being valid for two years does nothing to change that. The authority and the allowance are two different clocks.
Can I extend once I am there?
You apply to Immigration New Zealand for a visitor visa rather than stretching the visa waiver, and the twelve-month ceiling still applies over the top. Extensions are ordinary and are decided on the same questions as the original entry: funds, a departure, and a purpose that holds together.
What does the officer at Auckland actually ask?
Where you are staying, how long, how you are funding it and when you are leaving. New Zealand's border staff ask these more thoroughly than most, in a friendly register that people sometimes mistake for small talk. A dated departure answers the last one before it is asked.

Is there an exit check?
Departures are recorded, and the record is what matters for the twelve-month arithmetic. There is no exit tax and no separate departure form; the declaration you filed on the way in is the only paperwork the trip demands, and it is done before you land.
