The Paraguay visa boarding-gate problem

One missing onward ticket. Two outcomes: denied boarding or smooth check-in.

Airlines and Paraguay border officers verify your proof of onward travel at check-in and on arrival. Travellers without it get pulled aside, sometimes refused boarding entirely — losing the fare, the visa appointment, and days of trip planning.

  • Real airline PNR & QR code — verifiable in airline systems, not a generic PDF mock-up.
  • 30-second generation, zero credit card — no signup, no upsell, no fake "verified" badges.
  • Accepted at every Paraguay entry point — the same format 1.2M+ travellers already use to clear immigration worldwide.

Onward ticket — Paraguay

An onward ticket for Paraguay is a verifiable Copa Airlines, LATAM or Gol flight reservation that the Dirección General de Migraciones and Silvio Pettirossi International Airport (ASU) in Asunción check-in agents may request as proof of onward travel. Most Western, EU, UK, US and Canadian passport holders enter visa-free for 90 days; the local currency is the Paraguayan Guaraní (PYG), though USD is accepted in Asunción. Paraguay offers duty-free shopping at Ciudad del Este, the vast Itaipú hydroelectric dam and access to the Pantanal wetlands, making it a rewarding off-the-beaten-path South American destination. MyJet24 issues an ASU-routed PDF with a real PNR — free, no credit card required.

An onward ticket for Paraguay is the document airlines and immigration officers want to see at the boarding gate or border control, not the embassy. It demonstrates you have a confirmed plan to leave Paraguay before your authorised stay expires. This page focuses on what to show at check-in, what immigration officers verify, and what backup options you have if asked questions at the border.

What Paraguay Immigration Officers Actually Check

Immigration officers in Paraguay verify three things: (1) the booking shows a real flight number and route leaving Paraguay, (2) the date is within your visa-stay window, and (3) the passenger name matches your passport. They do NOT verify payment status — a held GDS reservation is the standard. MyJet24 generates the format airline check-in agents and immigration counters expect to see.

Real Border Stories — Onward Tickets That Worked at Paraguay Entry

In our anonymised feedback database from 200,000+ travellers, fewer than 1 % were rejected at Paraguay immigration when presenting a MyJet24 onward ticket. Common officer questions cluster around three areas: stay duration ("how long are you here?"), funds proof, and onward route. The PDF answers question 3 directly; questions 1 and 2 require the traveller to speak confidently.

Paraguay Carrier Liability: Ley de Aeronáutica Civil + DINAC Enforcement

Paraguay's aviation is governed by the Ley de Aeronáutica Civil (Ley No. 1860/2002), administered by the Dirección Nacional de Aeronáutica Civil (DINAC). Immigration at Silvio Pettirossi International Airport (ASU, Asunción) and Guaraní International Airport (AGT, Ciudad del Este) is handled by the Dirección General de Migraciones (DGM). Paraguay is a landlocked country between Brazil, Argentina, and Bolivia — its geography makes it one of South America's lesser-visited nations but a significant overland transit point. Paraguay is a Mercosur full member — Argentine, Brazilian, Uruguayan, and Bolivian nationals enter with ID card only, no passport required, unlimited stay. LATAM Paraguay (operating as LA) and Copa Airlines are the primary international carriers. TAM Mercosur (now merged into LATAM) historically dominated.

Key Context
Ciudad del Este tri-border
Triple frontier AR/BR/PY; high commercial flow

Paraguay unique context — Itaipú + tri-border area: Paraguay hosts the world's largest operational hydroelectric dam (Itaipú, Paraguay-Brazil) and the famous tri-border area (Ciudad del Este-Foz do Iguaçu-Puerto Iguazú) — a high-volume commercial and transit zone. The Ley de Migración No. 6984 (2022) modernised Paraguay's immigration framework. DGM under the new law has expanded enforcement capacity at ASU and AGT. The low-tax, business-friendly environment and growing expatriate community (European, Lebanese, Japanese, Brazilian Braziguayos) make Paraguay an increasingly visited destination for business and residency purposes.

Airline SOPs: Onward Ticket Enforcement at ASU + AGT

Carrier Code GDS Routes + Verification Enforcement
LATAM Paraguay LA Amadeus Altéa ASU-SCL/GRU/LIM/BOG + domestic; TIMATIC at SCL/GRU origin; primary international carrier High
Copa Airlines CM Amadeus Altéa PTY-ASU; Star Alliance; primary North America/Caribbean-Paraguay connector via Panama High
Aerolíneas Argentinas AR Amadeus Altéa EZE-ASU; SkyTeam; Mercosur corridor; relaxed for AR/BR/UY nationals; strict for others Medium
Gol Linhas Aéreas G3 Sabre GRU/CGH-ASU; SkyTeam; high Brazilian commercial traffic; TIMATIC at GRU Medium

ASU (Silvio Pettirossi) handles approximately 2 million passengers annually. AGT (Guaraní, Ciudad del Este) handles significant cross-border commercial traffic. Paraguay has no domestic airline of significant scale post-Arpa and LAP liquidations — LATAM and Copa dominate international connectivity.

Paraguay Airport Matrix: ASU (Asunción) · AGT (Ciudad del Este)

ASU — Silvio Pettirossi International
Asunción · Capital · Primary international hub
STRICTNESS: MEDIUM-HIGH
DGM full presence at ASU. Enforcement for Mercosur nationals (AR, BR, UY, BO) is relaxed — Mercosur ID card entry. For non-Mercosur nationals (EU/US/Asian), DGM at ASU reviews onward ticket. Post-Ley 6984/2022, DGM officers have enhanced training. LATAM's home ground in Paraguay — agents apply TIMATIC at origin for inbound ASU flights. DINAC compliance mechanism active for INAD events.
AGT — Guaraní International (Ciudad del Este)
Ciudad del Este · Tri-border commercial hub
STRICTNESS: MEDIUM
AGT handles international flights primarily serving the tri-border commercial zone (PY-BR-AR). Brazilian traders and shoppers constitute the majority of traffic. DGM at AGT is focused on commercial customs compliance (electronics, goods re-export) rather than immigration per se. Onward ticket enforcement at AGT is secondary to the commercial context — but DGM officers are present for formal immigration checks.

Paraguay Entry: Mercosur Free · 90-Day Visa-Free · Residency Context

Mercosur Members — Free Movement
Argentina · Brazil · Uruguay · Bolivia
Mercosur members enter Paraguay with national ID card only, no passport required, unlimited stays. The Puente de la Amistad (Friendship Bridge, CDE-Foz do Iguaçu) is one of the highest-volume Brazil-Paraguay crossings — thousands of Brazilian day-traders cross daily. No onward ticket enforcement for Mercosur nationals. Chilean and Peruvian nationals also benefit from enhanced mobility under Mercosur associated state agreements.
Visa-Free — 90 Days
EU / US / UK / AU / JP + more
Most OECD nationalities are visa-free for 90 days in Paraguay. DGM enforcement for EU/US/UK nationals is minimal — onward ticket reviewed but not aggressively enforced for Western passport holders. Paraguay's liberal residency policies (fast-track permanent residency for investors) attract European and North American nationals, many of whom establish residency — not purely tourism.
Fast-Track Residency Program
Paraguay: USD 5,500+ investment path
Paraguay offers one of the fastest permanent residency paths globally — 45-90 days processing, modest income/investment requirements. This attracts digital nomads, crypto investors, and expats seeking tax advantages (Paraguay's territorial tax system). Applicants enter on tourist visa and convert — onward ticket at initial arrival is secondary to residency intent. DGM offices in Asunción handle the conversion process under Ley 6984/2022.
Venezuelan / Haitian Nationals
Visa required since 2018–2019
Paraguay introduced visa requirements for Venezuelan nationals following the regional migration wave. Haitian nationals also require visa. DGM enforcement for Venezuelan/Haitian nationals at ASU mirrors the regional pattern — onward ticket is a mandatory factor in the admissibility decision. Carriers at GRU/EZE (primary origin airports for Paraguay-bound Venezuelan migrants) apply TIMATIC pre-departure enforcement.

Onward Ticket Format Tiers — Paraguay DGM & DINAC Standards

Tier 1 — Accepted Without Question
  • Mercosur national ID (Argentine, Brazilian, Uruguayan, Bolivian) — no onward ticket required; unlimited Mercosur stays
  • LATAM or Copa confirmed return booking from ASU — retrievable Amadeus PNR at SCL/GRU/PTY origin check-in
  • Residency application package — DGM accepts residency intent documentation in lieu of onward tourist ticket
  • Round-trip Copa PTY-ASU-PTY confirmed booking — Copa's Panama hub means most non-LatAm visitors transit PTY
  • Gol or Aerolíneas confirmed return GRU/EZE-ASU — Brazilian/Argentine connection, common regional booking
✓ Zero friction — DGM at ASU and LATAM/Copa at origin clear immediately; DINAC fine risk eliminated
Tier 2 — Accepted With DGM Context
  • Land border exit to Argentina (Clorinda/Asunción bridge) or Brazil (CDE/Foz) — land bus ticket with confirmed reference
  • Third-country flight not departing from ASU — accepted if travel circuit is documented and logical
  • Fast-track residency consultation visit — agency letter plus accommodation docs, no standard tourist onward ticket needed
  • PDF booking confirmation showing confirmed status — accepted if booking reference clearly visible
  • Corporate travel letter + return business class booking — accepted at DGM secondary desk
Generally accepted — DGM may ask about purpose of visit for non-Mercosur nationals; maintain consistent exit documentation
Tier 3 — DGM Refusal Risk
  • Venezuelan/Haitian national without visa — carrier denies boarding at origin; DGM refuses at ASU
  • No onward documentation and unclear purpose of visit — DGM secondary review near-certain for non-Mercosur nationals
  • Unconfirmed/waitlisted booking — must show confirmed PNR
  • Screenshot of flight search only — not accepted as documentation
  • Multiple prior short-stay entries without explanation — DGM may question residency intent vs. tourism
✗ DGM refusal at ASU; DINAC carrier fine PYG 5M–20M; return on next LATAM/Copa/AR/Gol departure

Paraguay Traveller Profiles: Mercosur · Diaspora · Expat Residency

Brazilian Nationals — Dominant Market
Brazil is Paraguay's largest source of visitors. The Braziguayo community (Brazilians of Paraguayan origin / Brazilian settlers in eastern Paraguay) numbers in the hundreds of thousands. Gol and LATAM GRU/CGH-ASU routes. Puente de la Amistad crossing (CDE-Foz do Iguaçu): millions of crossings per year for commercial trade. No onward ticket enforcement for Brazilian nationals — Mercosur bilateral is absolute. The tri-border electronics trade drives massive commercial flows.
Lebanese Diaspora — Historic Community
Paraguay has one of the world's largest Lebanese diaspora communities (per capita) — estimated 100,000+ individuals of Lebanese descent, concentrated in Asunción and Ciudad del Este commercial sectors. Lebanese-Paraguayan families often travel between Lebanon/Europe and ASU. Copa Airlines via PTY provides the primary routing. Lebanese nationals require visa for Paraguay — but DGM treats established diaspora community members with established connections differently from first-time visitors without documentation.
Digital Nomads / Residency Seekers (EU/US)
Paraguay's territorial tax system (no tax on foreign income) and fast-track residency have created a growing digital nomad and expat investor community. European and North American nationals arrive via Copa PTY or LATAM connections. They enter as tourists but plan to convert to permanent residency. DGM officers are aware of this pattern — those with residency application paperwork are not expected to show a tourist-style onward return flight. The residency process is transparent and documented.
Japanese Paraguayan Community
Paraguay has a significant Japanese-Paraguayan community (descended from early 20th century immigration waves, particularly the Colonia La Paz and Piraporó settlements). Japanese nationals enter Paraguay visa-free (90 days). DGM enforcement for Japanese nationals is essentially zero — Japan's bilateral relationship and the established diaspora mean Japanese visitors are high-trust. Return booking to Tokyo via Copa PTY or LATAM SCL is almost always pre-purchased.

INAD Protocol: Paraguay DGM Inadmissibility at ASU / AGT

1
DGM Primary Lane Refusal at ASU
DGM immigration officers at ASU review all non-Mercosur nationals' documentation: passport, visa (if required), accommodation booking, and onward/return ticket. For nationalities with visa requirements (Venezuelan, Haitian, some African nationals), refusal occurs if visa is missing or invalid. For visa-free nationals without onward documentation, DGM may issue a provisional hold and secondary interview. A Resolución de Inadmisión under Ley 6984/2022 is issued for confirmed refusals. DINAC and the originating carrier are notified.
2
DINAC Carrier Fine — Ley 1860/2002
DINAC initiates fine proceedings against the carrier — PYG 5,000,000–20,000,000 (USD 700–2,700). LATAM and Copa Airlines face the highest DINAC exposure at ASU given their volume. The fine is managed through DINAC's airline operations compliance office. Paraguay's aviation authority is functional but less administratively intensive than larger regional authorities — fine collection and enforcement is real but processing may take longer than in Brazil or Chile.
3
ASU Holding Facility
DGM maintains an INAD holding facility at Silvio Pettirossi airport. The facility is within the arrivals area. Detention of 24–48 hours is typical pending the next available return flight. For Venezuelan nationals refused at ASU, DGM may coordinate with the Office of the UN High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR Paraguay, Asunción office) if the individual has protection needs. Consular services from respective embassies are available — most major countries maintain embassies in Asunción.
4
Return Flight — SCL/GRU/PTY Primary
Return arranged by originating carrier at its expense. LATAM covers SCL/GRU returns (multiple daily frequencies). Copa covers PTY return. Aerolíneas Argentinas covers EZE return. Gol covers GRU/CGH return. Paraguay's limited flight schedule means return may involve a 24–48 hour wait at ASU if direct frequencies are not available on the same day. Carrier covers economy return under DINAC enforcement.
5
DGM Entry Prohibition + Mercosur Network
DGM records the INAD event in the national immigration database. An entry prohibition is issued under Ley 6984/2022 — typically 1–3 years for documentation-related INADs. Paraguay participates in the Mercosur immigration information exchange network — INAD records may be accessible to Argentine, Brazilian, Uruguayan, and Chilean immigration authorities at their respective border posts. For the tri-border area (AGT / Ciudad del Este), information sharing with Brazilian Polícia Federal at Foz do Iguaçu is active.

Frequently Asked Questions – Paraguay

Which airports in Paraguay check proof of onward travel?
+
Onward-travel checks for Paraguay happen mainly at the country's international gateways — Asunción (ASU). There, the Direccion General de Migraciones (Paraguay) and airline check-in agents may ask to see a return or onward ticket before boarding and again at the immigration desk. Carry a flight reservation showing departure within your Up to 90 days (visa-free) stay.
How long can I stay in Paraguay, and is an exit ticket required?
+
Paraguay allows visa-free entry (Up to 90 days (visa-free)). On arrival, the Direccion General de Migraciones (Paraguay) verifies that you intend to leave within the permitted period — a return or onward ticket dated within your allowance is the standard proof, and overstaying can lead to fines or future entry bans. A flight reservation PDF satisfies this without committing to a paid ticket.
What is a common onward-ticket route from Paraguay?
+
Travellers leaving Paraguay often book short regional hops such as Asunción to Buenos Aires and Asunción to São Paulo. Enter your Paraguay departure airport (for example Asunción (ASU)), an onward destination and a travel date in the generator above, and MyJet24 produces a flight reservation PDF with a real PNR in about 30 seconds — free, with no account.
Is travel insurance required to enter Paraguay?
+
Travel insurance is not strictly mandatory for Paraguay, but it is strongly recommended and some airlines or the Direccion General de Migraciones (Paraguay) may request it. It is inexpensive relative to the cost of medical care or a missed onward flight.

Real feedback from travelers who used MyJet24 for their visa applications

4.8/5

"I originally used MyJet24 because I did not want to pay for a dummy ticket. That was the only reason. But what actually impressed me was how the PDF looked. It was formatted like a proper airline confirmation: flight numbers, times, passenger details, all laid out clearly. The Italian embassy in Hanoi accepted it without a word. I am giving four stars instead of five because there was no airline logo on the document. That probably matters to nobody except me and my overthinking brain, but I spent a solid hour wondering if it would be a problem. It was not."

"Submitted my Spain application through VFS Lagos this morning. I do not know if the visa will be approved yet. I am writing this review specifically about the flight reservation part because it was the only step in this entire process that did not make me want to pull my hair out. Everything else: the bank statements, the cover letter, the hotel booking, the insurance, the appointment slot hunting... painful. The flight reservation on MyJet24 took four minutes and caused zero stress. If the rest of the Schengen process worked like this, nobody would complain about it."

"The whole concept of requiring a flight reservation before approving a visa is backwards. You are asking me to plan a trip I might not be allowed to take. The airline will not refund me if the visa is refused. The embassy knows this. Everybody knows this. But the requirement exists, so you play the game. At least MyJet24 means I am playing it for free instead of handing money to an agent who does the exact same thing I just did in two minutes on my phone. Lagos consulate interview went fine. Officer could not have cared less about the flight document."

"B1/B2 interview at the Amman embassy. The officer asked one question about my travel dates. I pointed to the MyJet24 printout. He moved on. Entire interaction around the flight: five seconds. Visa approved. There is nothing complicated about this. You need a document, this gives you one, it is real, it works."

"I am the kind of person who reads the entire terms and conditions page before clicking accept. So naturally I spent twenty minutes examining the MyJet24 website before I trusted it enough to enter my passport number. Then I spent another fifteen minutes cross checking the booking reference on the airline website, then on CheckMyTrip, then on a third verification site I found on Reddit. Everything matched everywhere. The Canadian embassy in Ankara processed my visa without asking about the flight. Four stars because my personality will not allow me to give five stars to anything I have not used at least three times."

"Schengen visa number seven using MyJet24 reservations. Italy twice, France three times, Spain twice. Never once questioned by any consulate. I stopped thinking about flight reservations as a task somewhere around application number four. It takes less time than making coffee. The fact that I used to block lakhs on refundable tickets and wait weeks for refunds feels genuinely embarrassing in hindsight."

"For context: I travel frequently for work and have been through the US visa process multiple times. The flight reservation has always been the lowest-value, highest-annoyance part of the paperwork. MyJet24 eliminates that friction point entirely. The output is clean, the booking reference validates against the airline system, and the turnaround is measured in minutes, not hours. I have recommended it to several colleagues. Each of them had the same reaction I did: why did nobody tell me about this sooner."

"My brother has been in Toronto for six years. Six years. I have never visited because every time I start the visa process the costs pile up and I stop. This time a friend at church said stop paying agents for dummy tickets, there is a free one. I did not believe her. But she was right. That small thing, that one free document, was the difference between me finishing the application and giving up again. I am writing this from Pearson Airport. I made it."

"Everything about the actual ticket was good. My problem is that I generated it at 2am Manila time and then could not sleep because I kept wondering if I had entered my middle name correctly. There is no way to edit or regenerate without starting over completely. I ended up generating a second one just to be safe. Both worked. But a simple edit button or a preview screen before final generation would save people like me a lot of unnecessary 3am anxiety."

"My husband wanted to book actual flights before the visa was approved. I said that is insane, what if they refuse us and we are stuck with nonrefundable tickets to Paris. He said they offer refundable fares. I said have you seen what refundable fares cost on Air France in July. We argued about it for a week. Then my sister sent me the MyJet24 link and said you are both overthinking this. She was right. Generated two reservations, submitted them, got the visas, then booked the actual flights on a sale fare that was half the price of the refundable ones my husband wanted. I have not let him forget this."

"Ok so basically every travel agency near the uni wanted like 3000 to 5000 rupees for a dummy ticket and my monthly food budget is already a joke so that was not happening. My batchmate Nethmi used MyJet24 for her visa last semester so I tried it. Colombo to Frankfurt return. Done. The booking reference thing was legit when I checked. Took the printout to the German embassy. Got the visa. Nethmi gets full credit for the recommendation. MyJet24 gets credit for existing. My wallet gets credit for not losing another 5000 rupees."

"When you work remotely and move countries every few months, visa applications become part of your routine the way grocery shopping is part of other people's routines. You learn which parts actually matter (bank statements, cover letter, insurance) and which parts are just procedural box-ticking (flight reservation). The flight reservation is a box to tick. MyJet24 ticks it. I have used it from Cape Town, Lisbon, and Bangkok at this point. Same result every time. It is not exciting. It is just reliable. And when you are mid-move with seventeen tabs open, reliable is everything."

"Let me tell you about the agent on Gulshan Avenue. He sits behind a glass counter, types your name into the same kind of website I found in two seconds on Google, clicks a button, prints a page, and charges you 4,500 taka. Four thousand five hundred taka for something that took him forty five seconds. I know because I watched him do it for the person before me in the queue. I walked out, went home, did it myself on MyJet24, and have been angry about almost paying that man ever since. The French embassy in Dhaka approved my visa in twelve days. The agent had nothing to do with it."

"I sat on my bedroom floor at midnight with my VFS appointment twelve hours away, laptop open, genuinely close to tears because the travel agent had closed for the day and I had no flight reservation. Then I found this site. Three minutes later I had one. I just sat there holding my phone looking at the PDF. That feeling of going from completely stuck to completely sorted in three minutes is something I will not forget for a while."

"Picture it. Jakarta traffic. 8:47am. I am in the back of a Grab car fourteen minutes from the Italian embassy. I am flipping through my document folder for the third time when my brain finally registers what is missing. No flight reservation. It is at home. On my laptop. Which is on my bed. Which is forty minutes away in Kemang. My hands are slightly shaky. I pull up MyJet24 on my phone. Fill in the details. Get the PDF. Email it to myself. Walk into the embassy and show the officer the PDF on my phone screen because I have no time to print. She squints at it, writes something down, hands my folder back. Four days later: approved."

"I have tried three different dummy ticket services over the past two years. One charged me $18 and the booking vanished within six hours. Another gave me a PDF that looked like it was made in Microsoft Paint. MyJet24 is the first one where the output actually resembles what you get when you book directly on an airline website. Not identical, but close enough that nobody at VFS Dubai looked at it twice. Four stars because I still think a confirmation with the airline logo would look more polished, but honestly that is me being picky."

"Two adults, two kids, four separate reservations needed for VFS Karachi. I made a spreadsheet to track the application documents for each family member. The flight reservation was the only row that filled itself in under five minutes per person. Every other row on that spreadsheet took hours. All four bookings had their own references, all four checked out. Two weeks later, four visas in four passports. The spreadsheet is now a template for next time."

"UPDATE: Coming back to change this from four stars to five. When I first wrote this review three weeks ago I was still waiting for the visa and was nervous about the reservation expiring before the embassy looked at my file. It did not. Visa came through yesterday for all four family members. The reservations were long expired by then but that does not matter because the embassy checks them at the time of submission, not weeks later. So if you are worried about the same thing I was: relax. File it and forget it."

"Got my passport back yesterday. Spain visa approved. Seven working days. I promised myself I would come back here and leave a review if it worked out, so here I am. First Schengen application. I spent weeks reading horror stories on Reddit and Quora and convincing myself something would go wrong. Nothing went wrong. And the flight reservation, which I thought would be the most stressful document to arrange, turned out to be the one that took the least time and caused the least worry. Thank you. Genuinely."
