Brazil changed sides in 2025, and a lot of published advice has not caught up. Three large passport populations that entered freely for years now need an authorisation before they travel, while EU, UK and Japanese passports still arrive with nothing but the passport. Whichever group you are in, the question moves to the airline counter, because the carrier is the one facing a penalty if it boards someone the border turns around.
Five fields do the work: the name as the passport spells it, the outbound and return dates, the airports — Sao Paulo Guarulhos (GRU), Rio de Janeiro Galeao (GIG), Brasilia (BSB) or Campinas Viracopos (VCP) — the operating carrier, and the reference. Less than in most of the region. Brazilian arrival checks are comparatively brisk for visa-exempt nationalities. An address is useful to have; the things that actually generate problems here are money and minors.
Does anyone look the code up?
At check-in on the transatlantic and regional sectors, fairly often. At the Brazilian counter the Federal Police are looking at your passport and your record. The airline is the party with the liability, and therefore the party that checks.
When is paying the better option?
For an open-ended stay, and for the overland traveller. If your genuine exit is a bus to Buenos Aires or a river crossing into Peru, no airline can see it — so the booking you show is standing in for a real plan and ought to hold up to being queried.
Do I need a visa or not?
Check your own nationality rather than reading across. Brazil sets requirements by reciprocity, which means the answer genuinely changes and changes for reasons that have nothing to do with you. British citizens currently visit visa-free for ninety days.
Is an unpaid booking honest to show?
Yes, as a booking; Brazil does not ask what you paid. Save the care for the two things that do catch people — the online cash declaration above ten thousand dollars, and the authorisation paperwork for a child travelling without both parents.
Do I need a visa for Brazil?
It depends entirely on your nationality, and Brazil has changed its position more than once in recent years on the basis of reciprocity. British citizens visit without a visa for up to ninety days for tourism. Anyone holding another passport should check their own case rather than reading across from someone else's experience.
Why does reciprocity matter here?
Because Brazil sets its requirements by mirroring what other countries ask of Brazilians. That makes the rules genuinely changeable in a way that visa policy usually is not — a nationality that needed nothing one year can need a visa the next, and the reason will be something that happened in a different capital.
How long is the stay?
Ninety days for tourism. It is a straightforward figure, and Brazil is one of the more relaxed borders in South America at the point of arrival — the complications here sit around money and around children rather than around the entry itself.
