How quickly is it ready, and what does that get me in Mexico?

The officer at the booth is choosing how many days to write on your stamp, anywhere from thirty to 180, and a departure date they can see is one of the few things you control in that decision. Turning up with nothing tends to produce the smaller number.
How long does the reservation stay useful?
Through check-in and the booth, which is the only place it does real work. After that what governs your trip is the figure on the stamp, not the date on the booking — and if the two disagree, the stamp wins every time. Read it before you leave the arrivals hall.
Does every traveller need their own?
One per passport, in the passport's spelling. It matters more than usual because each person gets their own stamp with their own number of days, and families are not always given the same figure. Check every passport in the group, not just yours.
Do they want to see where I am staying?
Often, and it feeds the same decision as everything else. An address in Tulum with a departure three weeks out describes a coherent trip; no address and no departure describes a question mark, and the answer to a question mark is thirty days.
Will the booking reference be checked?
At check-in with the airline, sometimes. At the Mexican booth, rarely — the officer is reading the shape of your trip rather than querying a system. That said, the shape has to hold together, and a reference that resolves is what makes it hold together if anyone does look.

And if you are landing in Quintana Roo at all — Cancún, Cozumel, Tulum — there is the 285-peso state tax to settle before you fly home.
Is a held reservation honest to present here?
Yes, as a reservation. Border officials may ask for evidence of onward travel; a dated booking is that evidence, and nothing asks you to have paid for it. What would be dishonest is presenting it as a purchased ticket or altering the document — and since the INM records your entry digitally now, a false statement is one that stays on file.
Whatever happened to the FMM tourist card?
The paper slip everyone used to fold into their passport is gone. What you get now is a stamp with a number of days written on it, and a digital record you can download from the INM portal within sixty days of arriving. Losing a piece of paper no longer costs you anything; losing track of the number written on the stamp still does.
Is 180 days the stay I will actually get?
It is the maximum, not the default, and this is the thing people get most wrong about Mexico. The officer decides and writes a figure on the stamp — thirty, sixty, ninety, sometimes the full 180. Two people on the same flight can be given different numbers. Read yours before you leave the hall.
What decides which number I get?
The officer's reading of your trip: how long you say you are staying, where you are staying, what your return booking shows, and whether the account holds together. An arrival with no departure date and no address is the profile that gets thirty days written on it, which is how a planned three-month stay turns into a problem.
Do I need a visa?
Not as a tourist. Mexico is unusually open at the door and unusually specific at the stamp — the permission is easy to get and precisely bounded once you have it. That combination is why the departure evidence matters here even though nothing about the entry is difficult.
Do I have to show a return ticket?
Border officials may require a return or onward ticket and proof that you have enough money for your stay. Both are written into what they may ask, and both feed the same judgment about the number of days to write down. This is where a dated booking does real work rather than ceremonial work.
What about arriving by land?
Then there is an extra step: an immigration form to be completed online on the INM website before you cross. It is easy to miss because the flight arrivals do not need it and most travel advice is written for people flying into Cancún. Crossing at Tijuana or Nuevo Laredo without it is an avoidable delay.
What are the passport rules?
It must be valid for the duration of your stay, and the Mexican embassy recommends at least 180 days of validity. The recommendation is worth following even though the requirement is looser — a passport with four months left invites a shorter number on the stamp.
How fast can I have the reservation, and does it matter here?

"UPDATE: Coming back to change this from four stars to five. When I first wrote this review three weeks ago I was still waiting for the visa and was nervous about the reservation expiring before the embassy looked at my file. It did not. Visa came through yesterday for all four family members. The reservations were long expired by then but that does not matter because the embassy checks them at the time of submission, not weeks later. So if you are worried about the same thing I was: relax. File it and forget it."
