How fast can I have the document, and does that matter here?
Thirty seconds, and on this route it matters more than on most. The check that stops people is the airline desk before departure, and it happens when the queue is already moving. Being able to produce a dated booking with a resolvable reference in the time it takes to unlock a phone is the difference between boarding and rebooking.
How long does the reservation stay useful?
It has to survive check-in and the counter at Suvarnabhumi or Phuket, and that is all. It is not a ticket and nobody expects it to be one. What does need attention is the departure date on it: if your plans slip past the 30 days the exemption now gives, the booking has to move with them rather than sit there describing a trip you are no longer taking.
Can one document cover two of us?
No — one per passport, because the name has to match character for character. The TDAC works the same way: each traveller files their own card, even a couple arriving on the same flight into the same hotel. Do I need the hotel booking as well as the flight?
The TDAC asks where you are staying, so you need an address whether or not anyone inspects the confirmation. They will type it, not phone it. A booking reference either resolves in the terminal in front of them or it does not, and that is the whole test. It is also why a screenshot of a booking confirmation page is worth nothing at that desk — there is no reference to type, so there is nothing to check.
What is different about the Premium version?
Where the reference lives. On the free PDF it lives on the document; with Premium it also sits inside the airline's own system, so a ground agent who queries it gets a record back. For Thailand that difference shows up at the departure gate abroad, which is precisely where the FCDO records British nationals being refused for lacking onward evidence.
Does any of this change if I fly into Phuket instead of Bangkok?
The rules are the same but the mix of travellers is not. Phuket and Krabi take a lot of one-way arrivals with vague plans, and the counters there see that pattern daily. A dated departure and a named address do more work at a resort airport than they do at Suvarnabhumi, where most arrivals are obviously round trips.
Is a held booking honest, given it is not a ticket?
Presenting a reservation as a reservation is accurate, and a held booking is a real one — the airline system holds it. What would not be accurate is editing the PDF, inventing a reference, or describing it as a purchased ticket. A false statement to a Thai immigration officer is an offence in its own right, separate from whatever happens to your entry, which is reason enough to hand over the document exactly as it was issued.
The visa exemption drops to 30 days on 15 September 2026 — what does that mean for my booking?
It means the departure date on your reservation has to fit a shorter window than most advice online assumes. Until now the exemption ran to 60 days; from 15 September 2026 it is 30 for tourism, with Mauritius and the Seychelles on 15 and a handful of bilateral arrangements keeping 90, 30 or 14. If you built a six-week itinerary on a page written last year, the booking that supported it no longer supports it.
What is the TDAC and is it the same thing as a visa?
No. The Thailand Digital Arrival Card is the replacement for the old paper TM6, mandatory since 1 May 2025 for every foreign national arriving by air, land or sea. It is free, filed at tdac.immigration.go.th, and you can only submit it within three days of arrival. It records where you are staying and how long — it does not grant you anything. The permission still comes from the officer at the counter.
Does the TDAC ask for my flight details?
It asks how you arrive and where you will stay. The departure side is what the officer compares it against, which is why the dates on your booking and the dates you type into the card should describe the same trip. A card filed for a two-week stay next to a booking that leaves in five weeks is a contradiction you will be asked about in person.
How much money do I need to show?
The published figure is 10,000 baht per person or 20,000 per family, and officers do ask for it — not on every flight, but often enough that it is worth having accessible. It is checked alongside the onward evidence, and the two together are what settle the question of whether your stated plan is fundable.
What passport validity does Thailand want?
Six months beyond your arrival date and at least one blank page. That is stricter than Japan, which asks only that the passport cover the stay, and it is checked. A passport with five months left is turned away at the counter regardless of what else you carry.
I am applying for a proper Tourist Visa instead. Does the reservation still help?
Yes, and it does more work there. The e-Visa application at thaievisa.go.th asks for your travel plan, and a held booking evidences it without spending money before a decision exists. A Tourist Visa buys you 60 days where the exemption now gives 30 — which, after 15 September 2026, is the reason a lot of longer trips will need one.
Which airport should the booking use?
Bangkok Suvarnabhumi (BKK) for most long-haul, Don Mueang (DMK) for the low-cost carriers, Phuket (HKT) for the south and Chiang Mai (CNX) for the north. They are separate airports with separate check-in halls — a booking that arrives at Suvarnabhumi and departs from Don Mueang is perfectly normal, but leave yourself the transfer time, because they are an hour apart in traffic that does not care about your schedule.
What has to be on the document?
Your name as the passport prints it, a dated departure out of Thailand, the operating carrier and a booking reference that resolves. Five things. A Thai immigration officer looking at a phone screen at Suvarnabhumi at midnight is checking whether the date sits inside the days they are about to grant — not admiring the layout.
Free or Premium for Thailand?
The difference is whether the reference also lives in the airline's system. Thailand is one of the places where that matters more than average, because the airline check is where most people are stopped: the FCDO records British nationals being refused for lacking onward evidence, and that refusal happens at the gate abroad, not in Bangkok.

"Everything about the actual ticket was good. My problem is that I generated it at 2am Manila time and then could not sleep because I kept wondering if I had entered my middle name correctly. There is no way to edit or regenerate without starting over completely. I ended up generating a second one just to be safe. Both worked.
