What does Premium actually add?
The reference exists in the airline's system as well as on the document, so an agent who queries it gets a record back. For Indonesia that matters at the departure gate abroad and, at least in principle, at the visa-on-arrival counter, because the onward journey is part of what is being granted rather than a separate courtesy.
Is Bali different from arriving at Jakarta?
The rules are identical; the scrutiny is not. Ngurah Rai handles the country's largest volume of tourist arrivals, many of them open-ended, and it also collects the 150,000 rupiah provincial levy that Jakarta does not. Expect more questions and one more payment than a Jakarta arrival involves.
Is presenting a reservation instead of a ticket acceptable?
Yes, when it is described accurately. A held booking is real — the airline system holds it — and the condition attached to the VOA is proof of an onward journey, not proof of purchase. What would cross the line is altering the document, inventing a reference, or calling it a paid ticket in front of an immigration officer.
Is proof of onward travel actually a condition for the Indonesian visa on arrival?
Yes, and this is the unusual part: it is not a recommendation, it is a stated condition of the VOA. The FCDO puts it plainly — to obtain a visa on arrival you must have proof of your onward or return journey. Most countries leave that to the airline. Indonesia writes it into the entry route itself, which is why arriving at Ngurah Rai on a one-way booking is a genuinely bad idea rather than merely a risky one.
Should I use the e-VOA before I fly or buy the VOA at the airport?
Both routes exist and cost the same. The e-VOA is applied for online through the immigration website before departure, and the advice is to file at least a week ahead; the counter version is bought on arrival with cash or card. The online route mainly buys you a shorter queue at Bali in high season. Either way the onward evidence is part of the requirement, not a separate check.
What does the visa on arrival cost and how long does it give me?
500,000 rupiah for 30 days, single entry, payable by cash or card. It can be extended once, for another 30 days, at any immigration office inside Indonesia. That is 60 days maximum on this route — after which you leave, and the departure date on your booking should reflect which of the two you actually plan.
What is the All Indonesia arrival card and when do I file it?
It is the online customs and health declaration, filed on the All Indonesia arrival card website within 72 hours of arrival. It is separate from the visa and separate from the Bali levy — three different things people routinely confuse. The 72-hour window means it cannot be done weeks in advance along with everything else.
How much passport validity does Indonesia want?
Six months beyond arrival and at least two blank pages. Two, not one — the same as India and stricter than most of the region. It is checked at the counter, and a valid e-VOA does not rescue a passport that fails it.
What has to be on the reservation?
The name as the passport prints it, a dated departure out of Indonesia, the operating carrier and a reference that resolves. Because the onward journey is a condition of the VOA rather than an airline preference, this is the document that the entry route itself rests on — not a nice-to-have you produce if asked.
Which airport should the booking route through?
Jakarta Soekarno-Hatta (CGK) for the capital, Bali Ngurah Rai (DPS) for the overwhelming majority of tourism, Surabaya (SUB) for East Java and Lombok (LOP) for the islands east of Bali. Bali takes the most scrutiny simply because it takes the most arrivals with vague plans.
Free or Premium for Indonesia?
