The old Serviço de Estrangeiros e Fronteiras was broken up: the PSP took over border control at airports, the GNR at land and maritime borders, the Judicial Police the investigations, and AIMA — operational since 29 October 2023 — the residency and integration side. The agency you deal with for paperwork is not the one that stamps you in.
What is AIMA and will I meet it?
The Agency for Integration, Migration and Asylum. As a visitor, almost certainly not — it handles residency, integration and asylum, not arrivals. Its existence matters to you only in that searching for Portuguese immigration turns up an agency that has nothing to do with your flight.
How long can I stay?
Ninety days in any 180-day period across the whole Schengen area, of which Portugal is one part. The allowance is not Portuguese, it is shared — and it is spent by every day in Spain, France or anywhere else in the zone just as surely as by days in Lisbon.
What are the passport rules?
Two of them. The issue date must be less than ten years before you arrive, and the expiry must be at least three months after the day you plan to leave the Schengen area. The second one is measured from your departure, not your arrival, which is where people miscalculate.
Do I need to show a return ticket?
You may be asked for one, along with proof that you have enough money for your visit. Both sit in the entry conditions the Portuguese border applies. Lisbon and Faro handle enormous volumes of budget-airline traffic, and the questions follow the itineraries that look open-ended rather than the passengers.
What has to be on the reservation?
The name as the passport prints it, a dated departure from the Schengen area, the operating carrier and a reference that resolves. Note the wording: the departure that answers the question is one that leaves the zone, not one that flies you from Porto to Madrid.
