Why your Egypt visa file asks for proof of a flight
The requirement lands twice on an Egyptian trip. Once at the portal, which wants a flight itinerary before it will take the application at all. And once at the departure gate on the outbound leg, where the airline — not you — pays to fly a refused passenger home, and therefore looks. Paying for a ticket answers neither of them any better than holding one does.
Name as the passport prints it. Out and back. The airport — Cairo (CAI), Hurghada (HRG), Sharm el-Sheikh (SSH), Luxor (LXR), Aswan (ASW), Marsa Alam (RMF) or Alexandria Borg el-Arab (HBE). The portal, if your passport is on the e-Visa list: more than seventy nationalities are, including the EU and Schengen states, the UK, the US, Canada, Australia, Japan and South Korea. Around forty-six of those can also take a visa on arrival. Many African and South Asian passports are on neither list and have to file at the Egyptian mission covering where they live, which is slower and not interchangeable with the online route.
How far ahead should the booking be dated?
Far enough that the application is created at least seven days before departure — the portal enforces that and publishes no faster channel. After that the useful span is however long you need the dates to hold still, because the e-Visa binds to what you typed. Changing your mind later is a fresh application, not an edit, which is an argument for a booking you can move rather than a fare you cannot.
Does anyone actually key the reference in?
At the gate, routinely. The carrier is liable for taking a refused passenger back, so the desk in Frankfurt or Dubai has both a terminal and a motive. EgyptAir's own conditions of carriage go further: miss a flight without telling them and they may cancel your later sectors. A reference that comes back clean ends the exchange in seconds; one that does not, does not.
Where is the line between a reservation and a false statement?
At accuracy. A held booking is real and calling it a booking is true. What crosses the line is describing it as something else — editing the PDF, inventing a reference, or presenting it as a purchased ticket. Egyptian law treats a false statement to an authority as an offence in its own right, separate from whatever happens to the visa, which is reason enough to submit the document exactly as issued.
Which airport should the booking route through?
Cairo (CAI) for long-haul, Hurghada (HRG) and Sharm el-Sheikh (SSH) for the Red Sea, Luxor (LXR) and Aswan (ASW) for the Nile, Marsa Alam (RMF) for the southern resorts, Alexandria Borg el-Arab (HBE) in the north. One detail worth knowing at Cairo: EgyptAir works out of Terminal 3, which opened in April 2009 and took the Star Alliance carriers with it, while Terminal 2 handles the rest.
Does the address have to match the flights?
More than in most places, and the Sinai stamp is why. Arrive at Sharm el-Sheikh on the free fifteen-day permission and your address has to be inside the resort zone. A Cairo hotel beside a Sharm arrival is not an untidy detail — it describes a trip that permission does not cover, and the officer reading it has no way to know which half you meant.
Free or Premium for an Egyptian application?
The portal takes either; it reads fields, not tiers. Where the difference shows is the boarding gate, and the odds there depend on your route. A scheduled long-haul into Cairo with a return in the booking rarely gets queried. A one-way charter into Hurghada or Sharm el-Sheikh in high season is a different profile, and a reference the agent can resolve settles it without discussion.
What should be on my phone when I land?
The PDF, saved offline, already open. The officer is checking that your departure falls inside the thirty days about to be stamped in, and a file on screen makes that a glance rather than a conversation. Add cash if you are not landing at Cairo: outside the digital pilot the paper sticker costs USD 30 and is bought at a bank counter before you reach passport control at all.
Does the visa2egypt.gov.eg e-Visa form require a flight reservation?
The Egyptian e-Visa application asks for your intended arrival and departure dates and for an address in Egypt. A booked flight reservation is the document that makes those dates verifiable, which is why most applicants attach one. You do not have to buy a ticket: a held reservation with a real PNR shows the same route and dates. Note the portal address — the correct one is visa2egypt.gov.eg. A shorter-looking evisa.gov.eg does not exist.
How much does the Egypt e-Visa cost in 2026?
Since 27 April 2026 the tourist e-Visa costs USD 30 for a single entry and USD 65 for multiple entries, both a USD 5 increase over the previous USD 25 and USD 60. The fee is paid by card during the online application at visa2egypt.gov.eg and is not refunded if the application is refused.
How long does the Egypt e-Visa take, and how early should I apply?
The portal itself tells applicants to create the application at least seven days before departure. Approvals often arrive faster, but seven days is the figure Egypt publishes, and there is no expedited channel. Apply once your travel dates are firm — the e-Visa is tied to the dates you enter, so a reservation you can still change is worth more at this stage than a paid ticket.
Can I upload a flight reservation instead of a paid ticket to visa2egypt.gov.eg?
Yes. Egypt asks you to evidence your travel plan, not to prove you have already paid for it. A flight reservation held in an airline system carries a real booking reference, a flight number and a date — everything the form needs. Buying a non-refundable ticket before the e-Visa is granted only moves the financial risk onto you.
What passport validity does Egypt require?
Your passport must be valid for at least six months after the date you arrive in Egypt, and it must have at least one blank page. Border officers check both. A passport that expires five months after arrival is refused at the visa desk even when the e-Visa itself was approved.
Do I need a hotel booking for the Egypt e-Visa application?
The e-Visa form asks for an address in Egypt, so you need to name where you will stay. A hotel confirmation is the usual evidence; an invitation letter works if you are staying privately. If you are entering on the free Sinai stamp, the address must be a property inside the Sinai zone — a Cairo hotel does not match that entry permission.
Is the Egypt e-Visa single-entry or multiple-entry, and how long can I stay?
Both exist. The single-entry e-Visa costs USD 30, the multiple-entry USD 65. Either way the permitted stay is up to 30 days per entry, and extensions must be applied for inside Egypt before the current permission expires. Your departure flight should fall inside those 30 days — that is what the officer checks against the entry stamp.
What happens if my Egypt e-Visa is refused after I have bought a ticket?
The visa fee is not refunded, and an airline ticket bought at a non-refundable fare usually is not either. This is the specific reason embassies and portals worldwide accept reservations rather than purchases at the application stage: a reservation costs nothing if the answer is no.

"UPDATE: Coming back to change this from four stars to five. When I first wrote this review three weeks ago I was still waiting for the visa and was nervous about the reservation expiring before the embassy looked at my file. It did not.
